The Pegasus ATX 4S is an all-terrain tire for light trucks, SUVs and crossovers whose drivers want a rugged look and real gravel and dirt ability without giving up everyday road manners. Pegasus is a line launched in the US by American Pacific Industries. The ATX 4S comes in passenger-metric sizes and in LT sizes, on 15-inch to 20-inch wheels.
Wide grooves channel mud, water and slush out of the footprint. The casing is reinforced against cuts from sharp debris. Its UTQG on passenger-metric sizes is 520 A A: a treadwear grade of 520, high for an all-terrain, with A grades for both traction and temperature. Passenger-metric sizes are T-rated (118 mph) with roughly 12/32 inch of tread. LT sizes are mostly load range E (10-ply rating) with about 14/32 inch of tread for towing and payload.
The "4S" question is winter. Pegasus announced the ATX 4S with the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol, the industry's tested severe snow standard. That is different from M+S, which only describes tread geometry. It is backed by a 50,000-mile treadwear warranty on passenger-metric sizes and 40,000 miles on LT sizes. Pick the passenger-metric version for a half-ton truck or SUV that never tows heavy, and the LT version for a three-quarter-ton truck.
Best-suited for: Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ram 1500, Toyota Tacoma, Toyota 4Runner, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford F-250.
